To enhance people’s understanding of a subject, an illustrator creates and image/images to help people gain a better understanding of it. Publishers, advertising agencies, the broadcasting industry and architects use the skills and talent of illustrators. As an illustrator, you need to be observant with a good visual sense and drawing ability. You should have an interest in the subject matter, whether it is technology, science or education publications.
Technical/Scientific illustrators prepare detailed drawings and diagrams to help people understand technical or scientific information, for example instruction or maintenance manuals, publicity material and training films. In such cases the Illustrator will first establish what information the user needs to get from the illustrations. They then decide what the illustration should look like.
Illustration tools use vary and may include pens, pencils, paints and air brushes. Many Illustrator use computer graphics software packages such as Adobe Illustrator in their work.
